This Texas-based artist traces his earliest influence to his grandmother who was
the first to place a paintbrush in his hands and encourage his interest in art.
He vividly remembers her studio on the second floor of an historic home that
once served as a stagecoach stop just outside San Antonio. She would set up
still lifes for him to draw or take him outside where she would set up her
French easel and paint landscapes. "She had a crusty personality and could be as
mean as a barnyard billy-goat, but when she began to paint you could see the joy
in her face as her brush glided across the canvas."
Rusty graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Biomedical Communications and The University of Texas Health Science Center
at Dallas with a Masters of Science degree in Medical Illustration. He is a
Certified Medical Illustrator and a Fellow of the Association of Medical
Illustrators. For the past three decades Rusty has provided medical art for
major pharmaceutical companies, medical products companies, medical publishers
and ad agencies. He has also illustrated hundreds of articles for medical
magazines and patient education brochures.
Rusty's love for sports led him into developing a sports illustration portfolio
that landed him assignments with such notable magazines as Golf Illustrated,
Golf Magazine, the United States Golf Association, the Masters Journal
and Golf Journal. He has provided historical illustrations for Golf
House, the official museum of the USGA and posters for the
Coca-Cola Foods Division for the Summer Olympics. He also provided poster and
brochure art for the Dallas Cowboys NFL team and the Dallas Mavericks NBA team.
Six years ago Rusty set aside his commercial illustration ambitions to pursue
his childhood dream of painting outdoors and creating landscapes on location. He
studied with American painters Scott Christensen, Matt Smith, Don Ward and
Joseph Mendez at the Fredericksburg Artists School.
"I think outdoor painting,
once again, is being taken seriously as a true art form. I believe we are seeing
a time when there is more public interest in outdoor painting and there are more
truly gifted artists painting today than at any time in our history. All of our
great American painters spent time outdoors painting. I enjoy painting. I don't
care if I'm painting with a group or by myself just as long as I'm painting."
Rusty's work is represented by Annette Richardson Gallery in San Antonio Texas, Port A Gallery in Port Aransas, Texas, Victorian Gallery in Dallas, Texas and Riverbend Gallery in Marble Falls, Texas and Collector's Covey in Dallas, Texas .
